Britain's Glenn Tilbrook (formerly of Squeeze)
is one of our all-time faves! Glenn toured the U.S. twice this year supporting
his excellent new album, The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook, and
we caught both his SF solo accoustic performances. A helluva friendly
guy, Glenn likes to hang out with fans after the show and take pix. He'll
also entertain the idea of hosting a guest singer for
a duet, as we found out...
Back in July, SnappyRoo
sat front and center for Glenn's show at
an SF club called Slim's. If
you don't know Glenn's name, surely you'll recognize him as the voice
of Squeeze classics like "Black Coffee In Bed, Hourglass,
Take Me I'm Yours, Another Nail For My Heart,
and Annie Get Your Gun, to name a few.
During
the show, brave Roo approached the stage (aiming to fulfill a since-teendome
fantasy) and asked Glenn whether he was accepting applications for
duet partners. Luckily, he was and Roo shared the stage with Glenn
for a duet of "Temptation of Love" (a song he'd recorded with
Cathy Dennis). It was a resounding success! (But don't take our word for
it-- judge for yourself by clicking the top right pic of Roo & Glenn
to download the recording!)
Here's
Roo's review of the experience:
I'd practiced the tune and printed out a lyric sheet for us to share.
(Glenn was thankful because he'd forgotten some of it.) Were also
sharing the one microphone onstage so we're standing pretty close. Glenn
starts to sing and that wonderful, recognizable voice flows directly into
my ear like a dream! Wow!
We're
into the song, harmonizing, and its going well. After the first
verse, theres a few chords before we sing again and Glenn looks
over and gives me a BIG SMILE and laugh like hes really enjoying
himselfit felt wonderful! We continued and when it got to the big
crescendo chorus at the end, we dug into it and the song just floated
out of us. Whew! What a ride!
When
the song ended, Glenn threw his guitar around to his back and grabbed
me and gave me a big hug and said into my ear with great enthusiasm, THAT
WAS BRILLIANT! Im thinking--Holy Cow! Ive just sang
with my idol and when were finished he hugs me and says I"M
brilliant! Shesh!!!
After
I climbed down from the stage Glenn called for "a round of applause
for Roo! and raised a glass in my honor--shouting out his familiar
CHEERS THEN!
Mr.
Tilbrook
gave a stellar performance that night at Slim's--several times roaming
the room minstral style," pulling out some wonderful unplugged
Squeeze
classics like "Pulling Mussels From The Shell" and everyone
sang along. It felt like he was just hanging out with us in his living
room; we could have listened all night.
After
the Slim's show we had some autograph and chat time.
Glenn signed a promo poster for Roo saying "Your singing was tip-top
and made my night!" He signed Melindas little daughter Jamie's
leg cast. (She's been listening to Squeeze since in utero! Kudos to Melinda
& Shawn for raising her right!) Glenn took time to chat with several
other fans who were thrilled to meet him.
At
the second brilliant show on December 2, 2001 at a pub called Foley's
Cellar in SF, SnappyRoo and crew again snagged front-row seating and enjoyed
more of Glenn's excellent songsmanship. Afterward, SnappyRoo and three
friends were asked by Glenn's documentarian team (who'd been traveling
with and filming him) to be taped for the documentary--rapping about Glenn's
music and career. We were thrilled to be part of it and after awhile Glenn
joined and we were filmed interviewing him about his album and tour. Very
fun! Following this, Glenn hung around and took several pix with us like
the group shot at right.
He's taking life easy and happily doing his own thing.
We love Glenn--he's the best! Cheers then!
